Ways to Improve Your Memory and Mental Abilities
In the past, scientists believed that the brain stopped developing once a person reached adulthood. Today, however, it is clear that development continues over the course of subsequent decades. This adaptive process is called neuroplasticity. So what is it?

Neuroplasticity is the brain’s amazing ability to form new connections between neurons, a phenomenon that is particularly evident in children and young people. As a person ages, plasticity decreases. But that’s no reason to give up, because there’s always plenty of room to improve and support brain function.

Some studies suggest that foods containing vitamin E (found, for example, in peanuts, seeds, and nuts) can significantly improve memory and mental capacity.

If you want to improve brain function in ways other than through diet, here are a few options:

“Chunking”—that is, grouping items into logical categories—is a good way to remember more information. For many people, for example, grocery shopping is a daily battle against forgetfulness. However, if you categorize the items on your list into groups (such as dairy products, vegetables, or cleaning supplies), you’re halfway there. Chunking also works when memorizing numbers. If we have to memorize the number 165482359466, it’s a challenge for our brain. But when we break the number down into smaller parts—165-482-359-466—it becomes much easier to remember.

Another way to boost your memory is to use mnemonics. This technique is useful when we need to memorize several words in a row or a phrase. An example is a list of eight compositions by Bedřich Smetana, whose mnemonic is “BraProDali Dvě HuTaČerVi.”

A fun and relaxing way to improve your memory is to actively exercise your brain. After all, the brain works much like a muscle: the more you use it, the better it performs. Mental abilities can be improved through brain games such as Sudoku or puzzles. However, the brain also gets a great workout through daily interactions with the world around us and when tackling challenging work tasks that require logic, planning, and quick decision-making.

Conversely, chronic stress is a major enemy of the brain, as it can dull cognitive functions. Prolonged anxiety can also negatively affect decision-making and problem-solving abilities. It also has a negative effect on the part of the brain called the hippocampus, where important processes such as information processing, memory, and spatial navigation take place.

If you suffer from long-term stress and anxiety, it’s a good idea to see your doctor. You can also help yourself. There are many techniques that can help you manage stress better, whether it’s yoga, meditation, or mindfulness training focused on yourself and your surroundings. These stress-relieving activities can have a significant impact on your overall well-being and, in turn, improve your brain’s cognitive functions. An important and often overlooked activity is getting a good night’s sleep. It enables the brain to process and consolidate information more effectively and also improves short-term memory.
