Caffeine Improves Memory While Studying

Caffeine can be found in many forms. Whether it’s black tea, chocolate with a high cocoa content, or coffee—a very popular stimulant. Many people drink coffee with breakfast precisely because of its caffeine content, to help them wake up better and faster. But did you know that caffeine also helps improve memory?

There are many different studies on the effects of caffeine on the human body. Some praise its high antioxidant content, which helps prevent various diseases. Others, however, point out its negative effects when consumed in large quantities.

The Right Dose of Caffeine

Researchers at the University of California asked a sample group of 200 adults to participate in their experiment. The experiment involved observing random images. A few minutes later, half of the participants were given coffee containing 200 mg of caffeine, while the other half received only a placebo. The following day, all participants were asked to look at the images from the previous day. Their task was to determine whether the images were completely different, identical, or merely similar.

The group that took the placebo was only able to tell whether they had seen the photos before or not. They were unable to determine whether the images were the same or similar to those from the previous day. However, the group that received a dose of caffeine was also able, in most cases, to determine whether the images were the same or at least similar to those from the previous day.

The researchers then tried increasing the caffeine dose. However, this did not work out well. People tended to feel nervous and suffered from headaches. Therefore, it is not a good idea to drink large amounts of coffee. Its effects would likely be counterproductive and would not produce the desired result.

We can therefore summarize the results of this and other studies as follows: at an optimal dose of caffeine, our cognitive functions—memory, attention, and concentration—are positively affected.

Coffee helps. It can also be harmful

Drinking coffee is a long-standing tradition—few people can imagine their morning or workday without it. Studies show a link between moderate coffee consumption and a lower risk of Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease. It may also help reduce the risk of a wide range of mood disorders—such as depression.

So if you decide to use coffee as a study aid, you shouldn’t overdo it. The dose given to students in the test corresponds to approximately two cups of espresso. Larger amounts can induce anxiety, nervousness, and headaches.

Another problem that can arise with increased consumption is insomnia. That’s why drinking coffee in the afternoon and evening isn’t recommended—unless you plan to stay up all night studying.
