Feuerstein: The Psychologist Who Changed Our View of Human Intelligence

You may have come across the term “instrumental enrichment” before. The name might sound complicated and suggest some incredibly complex theory. In reality, however, it is an easy-to-understand method—its goal is a form of learning that looks nothing like what we’re used to in traditional classrooms.

The creator of instrumental enrichment is Reuven Feuerstein, a prominent figure in 20th-century psychology. Even as a student of Jean Piaget (also a world-renowned psychologist), he developed a theory that changed the way human intelligence is perceived. Unlike his teacher, Feuerstein held the view that human intelligence is not merely a process that matures spontaneously, but that it can be cultivated and refined throughout one’s life. He even claimed that this cultivation is a prerequisite for its ideal development.

Feuerstein’s life was very eventful in itself. He was born in 1921 into a poor Jewish family in Romania. Toward the end of World War II, he emigrated to what is now Israel, where, among other things, he helped Holocaust survivors and Jewish immigrants from around the world. It was there that he noticed that the cognitive performance of traumatized people was lower—and that these people appeared to have lower intelligence. However, upon working more closely with these individuals, Feuerstein discovered that their intellect had not actually diminished, but that their cognitive functions had merely been temporarily blocked as a result of their horrific experiences.

During his subsequent studies in Geneva and at the Sorbonne, Feuerstein discovered that some children struggle in school but demonstrate sharpness and talent in extracurricular settings (such as after-school clubs). According to Feuerstein, the key problem for such children is a cognitive deficit—they have not learned to think in broader contexts.

Feuerstein devoted a significant part of his life to developing methods for unlocking the potential of human intelligence. He collectively referred to these methods as “instrumental enrichment.” These are specific, pre-designed procedures for developing intelligence. However, it cannot be said that this method is in any way cumbersome. It consistently pursues a single goal—a smooth and natural learning process.

Among the key components of his method are: mediated learning, an emphasis on a suitable environment, and cognitive mapping. What are they?

Mediated Learning

What makes the instrumental enrichment method so beneficial is the interaction between the student and the teacher (the facilitator). The teacher is active and guides the student toward correctly completing a task—such as answering a question. The teacher carefully selects the individual steps to encourage the student’s desire for knowledge. At the same time, the teacher checks to ensure that the student fully understands everything.

Creating a Suitable Environment

According to Feuerstein, the following essential conditions must be met for cognitive growth:

  • ensure an environment in which every individual has a chance to succeed,
  • stimulate appropriate and positive stress—the task must be neither too difficult nor too easy,
  • identify areas the child has not yet mastered and gradually integrate them into the knowledge and skills already acquired.

In short, this rule can be characterized as “teaching in a way that meets the needs of the specific individual.”

Cognitive Mapping

Feuerstein’s concept of a cognitive map is used to analyze the tasks a student is working on. The advantage of mapping cognitive elements is that it directs instruction in a way that stimulates the student’s growth. Through gradual steps, it prepares the student to tackle more challenging tasks so that they do not experience stress associated with encountering obstacles that are difficult to overcome.

Which aspects of a task does a cognitive map examine? Primarily, the level of complexity of the task and the degree of proficiency required to complete it. It also focuses on the modality in which the task is solved (whether it is verbal, numerical, or pictorial) or on cognitive operations (object recognition, classification, or logical inference of relationships). The tool also maps, for example, the extent to which the task is abstract or concrete.

The instrumental enrichment method can be used with children as young as 8, and there is no upper age limit. An advantage of the method is its broad applicability—it is intended not only for children with learning and behavioral disorders but also for psychiatric patients and seniors. It is certainly also suitable for people whose work is cognitively demanding or for those who enjoy exploring alternative paths of personal development.
